KATHMANDU: Skipper Shakti Gauchan and Manoj Baishya plundered 38 runs from 16 balls as Region-IV (Bhairahawa) defeated Region-I (Biratnagar) by three wickets to enter the final of the Springwood Twenty20 National Cricket Tournament here on Wednesday. Bhairahawa will now face Region-III (Kathmandu) in Friday's final. Batting first, Biratnagar struggled to 105-9 and Bhairahawa reached 109-7 in 19.3 overs. Biratnagar changed their batting order with Nanda Kishore Mahato and Sunny opening the innings, but the move backfired when the latter was caught and bowled by Lal Bahadur Adhikari in the second over with three runs on board. Pun and Ajay Rajbanshi added 34 runs for the second wicket before Pun was caught by Akash Gupta off Vijay Thapa in the ninth over. Pun hit two fours in his 25-ball 19. Puspa Thapa was run out 10 runs later and Basanta Regmi reduced Biratnagar to 59-4 when he had Rajbanshi stumped by Manoj Baishya in the 13th over. Rajbanshi scored 19 off 28 balls including a six. Apart from the hard-hitting Mehboob Alam, who was dropped to No 5, others in the middle and down order failed to score in double figures. Alam hit two fours and a six in his 20-ball 27. Sagar Khadka took 3-21 and was ably supported by Basanta Regmi (2-13). In reply, Bhairahawa had a disastrous start. Opener Sagar Pun fell for one run with just four runs on the board and other opener Amrit Bhattarai departed after adding 19 runs with Antim Thapa, who added further 21 runs with Akash Gupta for the sixth wicket. Raj Kumar Pradhan bowled Akash (6) and at 70-5, Bhairahawa needed 36 runs from the last five overs. They came under pressure after losing two wickets for just one run. Antim was run out in a mix up with Rahul BK, who was caught by Puspa Thapa off the bowling of Ajay Rajbanshi. That brought skipper Gauchan and wicketkeeper Baishya at the crease and the duo did the rest to guide their team to final. The 18th over bowled by skipper Manjeet Shrestha proved vital as Bhairahawa scored 14 from that over including a first-ball six by Gauchan. Needing five runs in the last over, Baishya finished off the match in style hitting a boundary in the third ball after he had taken two runs each from the first two balls. In the other match, Region-VI (Baitadi) defeated Region-V (Nepalgunj) by four wickets to register their second straight victory after three consecutive losses. Batting first, Nepalgunj scored 86-6 in 20 overs and Baitadi reached 87-6 in 19 overs. Anupam Singh (not out 23) and Subendu Pandey (14) were the only Nepalgunj batsman to score in double digits. Bhuwan Karki, Prem Budal and Naresh Budhayer took two wickets each. In reply, Baitadi openers Prem Chaudhary and Binod Bhandari put on 41 runs before Subendu trapped Prem (12) leg before wicket. Binod departed after scoring 24 off 32 balls including three fours. After Subendu made it 45-3, Naresh Budhayer shared small partnerships and took the team towards victory before it became 76-6. Budhayer scored 17 off 24 hitting a four. Dinesh Agri (8) and Bhuwan Karki (5) scored the remaining 11 runs in seven balls as Baitadi won in the penultimate over. Agri hit a four in his five-ball unbeaten knock, while Karki scored not out five off seven balls. Subendu Pandey finished with 4-13 in four overs, while Sandeep Shrestha and Tajuddin Halwai took one wicket each. Baitadi finished fourth with four points, ahead of Birgunj (2) and winless Nepalgunj.
