Following the decision of Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) to implement an automated fuel price system on July 17, the Bagmati Province has decided to reduce fares of the publictransport from today. Prior to this, public transport fares had been adjusted on May 25.
According to the provincial gazette issued by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Transport under Bagmati Province today, the fares for long-distance passenger vehicles running outside the valley have been reduced by 2.30 per cent and freight vehicles (trucks) by 3.1 per cent.
With this, freight fares have decreased from Rs 14.19 per kilometre per tonne to Rs 13.74 per kilometre per tonne. Similarly, passengers commuting around five kilometres in the Kathmandu valley will be charged Rs 18 per person, Rs 24 for commuting to 10 kilometres, Rs 29 for commuting up to 15 kilometres, Rs 32 for up to 20 kilometres, and Rs 37 has been fixed for people commuting more than 20 kilometres.
According to the gazette, passengers will be allowed to carry baggage of up to 15 kg for free under the fare price but will be charged an additional five rupees per kg for extra baggage, which should not exceed more than 10 kg. With the adjustment, the fare from Kathmandu to Jiri - one of the longest commute distance via Dhulikhel-Khurkot-Manthali-Tamakoshi - has been reduced by Rs 23. The cost per ticket has been dropped to Rs 986 from the previous fare of Rs 1,099 per ticket.
