Imports via Birgunj Customs exceeded Rs 390 billion in the first eight months of the current fiscal year, marking an 11.40% increase (Rs 39.92 billion) compared to the same period last fiscal year.

According to Dipak Lamichhane, Chief Customs Administrator at Birgunj Customs Office, imports of petroleum products, raw soybean oil, and motor vehicles saw a significant surge this year.

Between July 16 and March 13, petroleum product imports (five types) amounted to over Rs 122 billion, slightly up from Rs 120.53 billion in the corresponding period last year.

Similarly, raw soybean oil imports skyrocketed to Rs 29.29 billion, a sharp rise from Rs 5.78 billion in the previous fiscal year.

Iron and iron-based materials also saw a notable increase, with imports valued at Rs 22.51 billion, compared to Rs 21.94 billion last year.

Additionally, machinery and its components were imported at Rs 21.67 billion, up from Rs 18.65 billion during the same period last fiscal year (2023-2024).

Motor vehicle imports totaled Rs 11.68 billion, compared to Rs 10.10 billion in the corresponding period last year.
