KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 13

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has fined 14 internet service providers Rs 50,000 each after finding they introduced unapproved service packages, charged customers beyond approved rates and failed to comply with tariff regulations.

The regulator said inspections found multiple violations of licence conditions, including offering internet packages without prior approval and failing to provide services in line with approved plans. The penalties were imposed under Section 47(1) of the Telecommunications Act.

The penalised companies are Broadlink Network and Communication, Classic Tech, Websurfer Nepal Communication System, Fiberworld Communication, Vianet Communications, Aeronet, Dish Media Network, Wifi Nepal, C.G. Communication, WorldLink Communications, Firstlink Communication, Pokhara Internet, Techminds Network and Subisu Cablenet. Under NTA rules, providers must submit proposed tariffs for approval at least three months before implementation.

Beyond the fines, the authority has ordered the companies to withdraw unapproved packages and tariff plans and report on the corrective measures taken. It has also directed them to compensate customers for losses resulting from the violations based on verified claims.

The action comes as the regulator moves to tighten compliance in Nepal's internet service sector and has warned all licensed providers to obtain approval before introducing new tariffs or service packages.
