Building memory power

KATHMANDU: Some students are serious about their studies, while others are busy looking for excuses not to open their books and pave a path of failure. Many even hide behind popular proverbs like, ‘Failure is the pillar of success’.

However, for those who fail to realise what they are expected to do and consequently try to cringe from their business, here are some quick tips that will help them avoid this mistake and sharpen their sense of understanding and learning instead.

Concentrate on your studies

All of us know about tape recording. Record a moment of a busy market and then in tranquillity record your own voice. Now, play your recordings and see the difference. You cannot hear the voices in the marketplace clearly, but your own voice is crystal clear. This is just an example to show you how even our brain cannot grasp many things at one time. So learn to concentrate on the thing that you are doing.

Concentration in the classroom is an integral part of process of building our memory power. Go deaf to anything else other than the teacher’s voice in the classroom. This will help you understand the chapters clearly and in detail.

Be regular about studies

You might have noticed around farmfields that the paths that aren’t often walked on have grass growing on them, while those that are used regularly show an intact trail along it. Same is the case with our brains. They need a regular polish of hard work otherwise they turn blunt. Many of you might have a habit of discontinuing your time-table for an unhealthy reason that your favourite show’s on TV or you’ve a cricket match. Averting your assignments today will make tomorrow’s classes a bane for you. All class discussions the next day will sound alien. So it is necessary to be regular about your studies.

Be it Saturday or Sunday, each day’s toil will help darken the imprint on your memory. Your regular actions are recorded in the subconscious and becomes spontaneous just as an experienced driver clears the traffic brilliantly even when he’s talking.

Simplicity, humility, respect, calmness, kindness, wisdom and modesty are some fundamental qualities in a good student.

Positive attitude is very essential in order to enjoy a sound learning. A single negative thought can push you down, whereas good thoughts can gain you the goodwill and support of all your classmates and others. This fosters your self-esteem.
