Kathmandu:

The preliminary round of the second NK Singh Memorial Running Shield inter-school debate contest was held at English Preparatory School on May 27. The legalisation of abortion was fiercely debated on by students of LRI School and Gyanodaya Bal Batika School. The LRI students fervently supported the idea of legalisation of abortion stressing that a woman’s right to choose and decide for her life must be respected by all. Underlining the moral concerns against killing and consequent social evils, Gyanodaya lost to LRI by 45 points.

Adarsha Vidya Mandir lost out to Little Angel’s School by 69 points as they debated on whether one should resort to taking up arms to suppress violence. AVM’s rationale on the need for positive aggression to quell violence was pooh-poohed by Little Angel’s School, who easily won over the judges as they made a persuasive case for peace. Galaxy Public School won the third debate by default after Nobel Academy gave up without a fight.
