KATHMANDU: Dr Sanduk Ruit, internationally renowned Nepali eye-surgeon was honoured with National Order of Merit, Gold on December 17 at the Royal Palace by the king of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. Dr Ruit is the first Nepali to receive such an award as per a statement issued by Kedar P Acharya, Personal Assistant of Dr Ruit.

According to Khim Gurung, Outreach Programme Manager at Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology Dr Ruit has been awarded for his contribution towards eye care development in Bhutan on the 108 National day of Bhutan.

Quoting Dr Ruit, kuenselonline.com stated, “It’s great to work in a country like Bhutan with wonderful people, good government and Kings. I’m privileged that I’ve been invited here more than 15 years ago to work.” The online website also mentioned that Ruit’s innovation in cataract surgery has enabled thousands of people across the world re-gain their eyesight and he has conducted modern cataract surgery and training in various parts of Bhutan since 2000, and has restored sight to hundreds of patients. Dr Ruit has also assisted in bringing HPV vaccines, which help prevent cervical cancer, for young girls in Bhutan.
