PEOPLESPEAK: Films’ dual job: Entertainment and education

Life is already far too serious for people to deal with. I prefer humorous movies that entertain — an escape from the difficult times we live in. For seriousness, just read the newspaper.

— Skip Koppert

I’d much rather prefer a movie, which is fun and entertaining and yet has a subtle message that provokes you to think. Yet, if it doesn’t appreciate the subtleties of reality, we’re certainly at a loss. As such, a movie, which is fun to watch and good to think about would be my favourite.

Movies are made for entertainment and amusement though some have a serious message to convey. Most of the people watch movies for entertainment. Sometimes, a “serious” movie attempts to dramatise ordinary situations while others are purely entertaining. A serious movie is probably more deserving of a viewer’s time. A movie can be essentially serious but also be highly successful as entertainment. Indeed, the most effective “serious” movies use slapstick farce to accentuate the gravity of the message therein. Thus, a preference for “serious” films does not exclude a taste for comedy. Even serious films have their funny moments, which make the films both more entertaining and persuasive.

The prime objective of a movie is to entertain. From my point of view, it is quite natural for people to go for entertaining movies rather than the serious ones. However, as human beings we are bound to perform our social, national and family duties also. Patriotic movies help imbibe the sense of patriotism while social ones may help to remind people about their social duties. Though I myself prefer light movies, I also watch the serious ones provided they help bring positive changes in my outlook.
