SCHOOL TIMES : Speaking the international language

We can define language as a system of sounds and words to used by human beings to communicate. It is the system of communication in words and in writing that is used by people of a particular country.

Each country has its own national language and besides the national language, various other languages are also spoken.

People of different countries cannot easily understand and speak the national language of another country and when they go to a second country for higher studies or to do a job, they may face some difficulties in adjusting to a new language and place.

However, knowing English helps a lot.

English is the national language of Britain, Ireland, the US, Australia and some other countries, but it is spoken and understood by almost all the people in the world. It is one of the most common languages spoken in the world today.

English is the language which is used as a base language for studies in most of the countries. English is also the base language for studies in Nepal. Most of the schools in Nepal are established as English medium schools and choose English as their medium of instruction so that students do not face the language problem when they go abroad for higher studies or for job opportunities or to visit.

English is not only the medium of instruction in many schools but many meetings and conferences are conducted in English. Therefore, we can safely say English is not only the national language of some countries, but it has gone on to become ‘the international language’. — Monika Shre-stha, Class VIII, VS GEMS, Thapathali, Kathmandu
