KATHMANDU, AUGUST 6

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in all the provinces over the next three days due to the impact of the monsoon trough and low pressure area.

"Nepal is under the impact of monsoon trough and low pressure area over Bihar and Uttar Pradesh of India. The axis of monsoon trough is now located close to the northern part of the country," read a weather forecast bulletin released by MFD today. It said monsoon rain with thunder and lightning was likely to lash some parts of all seven provinces in the next 24 hours.

It warned that heavy rainfall could trigger increase in water level in many rivers, leading to inundation and landslides.

It also advised all to maintain high alert against the possibility of natural disaster due to floods, landslides, soil erosion and debris flow.

Meanwhile, Flood Forecasting Section under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said there were risks of significant rise of water level in Koshi, Narayani, Karnali, Mahakali, Kankai, Kamala, Bagmati, Eastern Rapti, Western Rapti and Babai, and their tributaries. It advised the people living in the surrounding areas of the rivers and streams to maintain alert against possible flash floods.

The DHM issues a flood forecast bulletin at 7:00am during the monsoon on a daily basis. Under special circumstances, it may circulate the warning at anytime. It said flood and weather forecast was provided to the National Emergency Operation Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs before publishing it on the website.

The forecast is provided to all the ministries, departments, Nepal Red Cross Society and organisations working for disaster risk management, besides publishing it on social media.
