The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) has announced the successful completion of route fixing through the Khumbu Icefall, marking the official opening of the 2025 Everest climbing season.
According to SPCC CEO Tshering Sherpa, the team of Icefall Doctors reached the Nuptse face, laying 2,200 meters of rope in a single day. Despite harsh weather conditions, the team worked tirelessly for 18 continuous hours to secure the path.
An eight-member team of Icefall Doctors departed for Mt Everest's base camp from Namche Bazaar on March 9 to begin the work of fixing the climbing route up to Camp II. The team is responsible for maintaining the Khumbu Icefall route for climbers attempting Mt Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse during the spring 2025 climbing season.
SPCC has been tasked by the government with managing both the Icefall Doctors and waste management efforts in the Everest region. Annually, SPCC deploys a team of Icefall Doctors to fix climbing routes and ensure climbers have safe passage to summit the world's highest peaks.
"The Icefall Doctors work tirelessly, fixing ladders and ropes, to ensure the routes are open and secure for climbers," Sherpa said.
