KATHMANDU, JUNE 29

As the western disturbance combined with stronger monsoon trough causes more spells of rain across the country, Flood Forecasting Division under the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology warned that the water level in major rivers, including the Mahakali, Karnali, and Koshi was likely to rise, but stay below the warning mark during the next three days.

Similarly, the water level in the Narayani and its tributaries, Seti, Kaligandaki and Madi, Kankai, Kamal, Bagmati, East Rapti, Tinau, West Rapti, Babai and their tributaries is forecast to significantly rise and hover around the red flag, with some of them crossing the warning mark.

FFD further cautioned that large and small rivers, rivulets and stream in districts such as Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Ilam, Dhankuta, Udayapur, Kavre, Makawanpur, Sindhuli, Kapilvastu, Arghakhanchi, Pyuthan, Dang, Bardiya, Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta West), Palpa, Rupandehi, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts would witness increase in water flow.

"Some places of these districts could be hit by flash floods. Therefore, we would like to advise the people living adjacent to rivers to remain vigilant against any untoward incident," it said in an advisory issued today.

Heavy rain is forecast for three days in many parts of the country. "People living in low-lying areas and adjacent to small rivulets flowing through the should take special precaution.

Similarly, landslide-prone zones in the hills are likely to be affected by possible torrential rain and hence it is appropriate to cancel visit to such places unless necessary," FFD suggested.

Similarly, Meteorological Forecasting Division said the country was under the impact of monsoon trough, which is not located near the southern part of Nepal. "The strong monsoon trough is expected to bring heavy rain to many parts of the country.

There are chances of heavy rainfall at some places of the Province 1, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces," MFD said. It warned that soil erosion, inundation, flood and landslides triggered by rainfall could paralyse life, in addition to road transportation at some places.

FFD issues early warning to people and media about floods through its website about glacial lake outbursts, by monitoring rivers and streams. Flood and weather forecast are provided to the National Emergency Operation Centre under the MoHA, before publishing it on the website of DHM and MFD.
