35th Convocation Day at the Tribhuvan University

KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan University (TU) today observed its 35th Convocation Day amidst the presence of a large number of students in its premises, Kirtipur.

Addressing the function, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, who is also the Chancellor of the University, said TU had a catalytic role to play in bringing about change and development in the country.

He said that the role and scope of the varsity has grown in size in the face of crisis. “University should produce capable citizens to mitigate crisis,” he said, assuring unflinching support from the government for the academic and infrastructure development of TU.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Madhav Prasad Sharma, vice-chancellor of TU, highlighted that the TU has started the process of digitising the examination and publication of result to make it more manageable and systematic.

He further said that TU was launching research- oriented programme to make the university more research-oriented and academically excelling.

“We’re in a process to improve the higher education system by phasing out the Proficiency Certificate Level,” he said.

New programmes had been introduced, use of modern technology introduced, improved information system and transforming central library into a digital library was in the offing, he added.

To meet the international demand, TU, recently converted the three-year Bachelor’s programme into four-year.

Further, internal rules and regulations have been amended to make it more timely and improve its working procedure.

Out of total students in 47th grace list, who received their transcripts from June 14, 2008 to 14th June, 2009, 6,389 were present in the programme.

Out of total student in the programme, 5,070 graduates were from Bachelor’s level, 1,358 graduates were from Master’s level and 12 PhD holders.

The PM conferred certificates to the toppers of various faculties and subjects. On the occasion, Prof Lixin Zhang, assistant president of Tianjin University, China, delivered his speech. He said, “TU and Tianjin University have established a long history of friendship and collaboration.”
