KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 10

One of the major brains behind numerous evidence-based Dental Implantology Dr Frank Schwarz, professor and chairman of the Department of Oral Surgery and Implantology at the Centre for Dentistry and Oral Medicine (Carolinum) at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University in Frankfurt, Germany, is in Nepal teaching implantology to 50 dentists from Nepal and India.

Talking to THT Dr Frank Schwarz said the main purpose of this event was to share the experience and expertise, however, the participants are well trained medical professionals.

"We are trying to delve into more details to make advanced procedures more easy to apply in our everyday job," he said.

"Education is the key factor for learning and providing the best available care to the patients, we have many care options for patients but in implants we have to provide education. Because all these procedures are tech-nique-sensitive, you need to be trained." Dr Neil Pande The founding president of the Nepalese Society of Implant Dentistry representing Nepal in the conference said implant technology and biocompatible materials can give humans back their teeth.

"Having a tooth in mouth enhances the quality of life in a massive way. Because one of the major reasons for illness in elderly people is inability to chew food properly. But these technologies and methods are going to make their lives better."He also said that bringing such kinds of facilities will boost dental tourism in Nepal.

"We treat patients almost seven to eight times more economically than anywhere in the west.

Which has benefited Nepal through dental tourism. Because, people are coming from outside to get their treatment done in our countries," he said.

"It's a big thing for Nepal and India too because these two countries are their destinations for treatment. Hence, we need to use the best products when we are dealing with such problems."

Similarly, Sandeep Ghavri, General Manager at Geistlich Pharma India said the chief objective was to create awareness on hard and soft tissue augmentation procedures. "This is an adjunct procedure with implantology, which started several years back. But now, there is a high demand or you can say this is the need of the art to start practising bone augmentation and soft tissue augmentation procedures.

So that is the reason we have initiated such a workshop," he said.

All the 50 participants are prominent dentists from India and Nepal. We handpicked all such practitioners. So they can learn all these new procedures and then implement them in their practices and probably start teaching their subordinates or their friends and colleagues. And to bring all these new practices which are there in the global environment also come to India and Nepal, according to Ghavri.

Another participant from India Dr Sandeep Singh said there are two attractions of this programme; listening to professor Frank Schwarz and being in Kathmandu. Because Nepal and India have traditional attachments and events like this will boost the medical field and tourism in the both countries. "Dr Neil Pande and his team are the pillars of dentistry in Nepal. They are boosting the country's economy by organising such events with star people like Dr Schwarz." Geistlich Pharma India has organised the workshop incorporating Nepali and Indian dentists for the first time.
