Biography of Ganga Maya Adhikari launched

Kathmandu, June 15

Biography of Ganga Maya Adhikari written by a journalist and writer Ghanashyam Khadka was released today.

The book ‘Nyayako Abasan’ was released jointly by chairman of National Human  Rights Commission Anup Raj Sharma, former chief justice Kalyan  Shrestha, former minister Nilambar Acharya, journalist Kanak Mani Dixit and INSEC chairman Subodh Raj Pyakurel at a programme here.

Ganga Maya Adhikari has been staging a fast-unto-death at Bir Hospital for more than two weeks, demanding action against those guilty of her Krishan Prasad’s murder. Adhikari said she had been fighting for justice and did not fear death. She also said she wanted to make the world know about her fight for justice.

Releasing the biography of Acharya, NHRC Chair Sharma said that the commission would pile pressure on the government to provide her justice. “People do not get justice on time as political parties and leaders try to influence the judicial system,” he added.

Former chief justice Shrestha said the courts should deliver fair verdicts and it was necessary for judges to provide justice to victims on time.  “Ganga Maya’s struggle for justice is not only for herself but it is for all citizens. The government must listen to her voice and provide her timely justice,” said Nilambar Acharya, a constitution expert.

Maoists had killed Ganga Maya’s son Krishna Prasad after his arrest on May 27, 2004.

Despite lodging a case at Chitwan District Court, the verdict was delayed thereby denying justice to the victim’s family. Complaining that justice was delayed, Ganga Maya and her husband Nanda Prasad had staged hunger strikes several times. Nanda Prasad died while staging a hunger strike, while Ganga Maya is still fighting for justice.
