KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 28
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Indira Ranamagar has resigned from her post.
Although the established practice allows the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker to remain in office until a day before the filing of candidacies for the direct election, Ranamagar voluntarily stepped down on Sunday.
The Election Commission has scheduled November 28 and 29 for the submission of closed lists of candidates under the proportional representation category for the House of Representatives election slated for March 5, 2026.
However, Speaker Devraj Ghimire is learnt to continue in office until January 19, a day before the filing of candidacies under the direct election system.
Federal Parliament spokesperson Ekaram Giri said that former Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota had also continued in office until a day before the nomination filing for the direct election in the past.
Article 91 (6)(a) of the Constitution provides that the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker may remain in office until a day before the nomination of candidates for the HoR election, even in a state of dissolution of the House.
