Anti-graft body challenges Special Court verdict involving 17 individuals

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 15

The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court against the acquittal of 17 individuals in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the Melamchi Drinking Water Supply Project.

Issuing a press statement on Sunday, the anti-graft body said the appeal challenges the Special Court's decision that cleared the accused of corruption charges. Among those named in the appeal are Dr Sanjaya Sharma, then Secretary at the Ministry of Water Supply, and former project chairpersons Bhim Prasad Upadhyay and Gajendra Kumar Thakur.

The appeal also names Bhoj Bikram Thapa, who had signed an agreement between the government and the Gen Z movement protestors, as a defendant.

The CIAA had originally filed a corruption case against the individuals and entities at the Special Court in February 2024, citing irregularities in the Melamchi project.
