KATHMANDU, JANUARY 12

The State of Colorado in the United States officially introduced January 5 as Sherpa Appreciation Day to honour hundreds of Sherpa climbers who trace their origins to Nepal and constitute a thriving community in Colorado.

State governor Jared Polis honoured Sherpa climbers who successfully scaled Mt Everest proclaiming Jan 5 as the Sherpa Appreciation Day, according to Pemba Tenzing Sherpa, Founder of the Sherpa Foundation.

"Whereas, we are proud of all Sherpas who call Colorado home and value the skill and experience they bring to our mountainous state, therefore, I, Jared Polis, Governor of the State of Colorado, do hereby proclaim January 5th, 2023 as Sherpa Appreciation Day," reads the proclamation statement.

With the great support from social workers Narayan Shrestha and Pemba Tenzing Sherpa, Colorado-based association - Sherpa Nangpi Chhokpa – made it possible to get state recognition for the Sherpa community there, according to the association member Tashi Shepra.

Sherpas are known worldwide for their excellence in mountaineering and their ability to share their skill and culture with aspiring climbers from across the globe and Sherpas not only assist and guide international travelers safely through the Himalayas but are rooted in a respect for the mountains and commitment to their protection and conservation, the Governor said during the proclamation event.

Governor Jared honoured Everest summiteers including Kame Sherpa, Pemba Gyalje Sherpa, Chhiring Dorje Sherpa, Tashi Sherpa, Panuru Sherpa, Mingma Tenzing Sherpa, Nima Karma Sherpa, Ngawang Wangchu Sherpa, Tenzi Sherpa, Mingma Ongel Sherpa, Ngawang Pasang Sherpa, Phurba Namgyal Sherpa, Da Nuru Sherpa, Pasang Tenjing Sherpa, Tashi Tshering Sherpa, Pem Dorji and Moni Mulepati Sherpa at the State Assembly Hall.

"On behalf of all the Nepali climbers and Sherpas from around the globe, I want to thank the Governor of Colorado honouring Sherpa climbers in Colorado and proclaiming Jan 5 as Sherpa Appreciation Day," Pemba Tenzing said, adding, "I also want to extend my special thanks Narayan Shrestha for helping the community to make it happen and I also want to thank all the Nepali climbers who make peoples dream come true by putting their lives ahead of others."
