Couple injured as car driven by drunk driver hits scooter

Kathmandu, July 16

A couple was critically injured when a car (Ba 3 Cha 9234) driven by a man under the influence of alcohol hit a scooter (Ba 44 Pa 1295) head-on in Chhauni today, said police.

The injured have been identified as scooter rider Karma Lama and his wife Samjhana, who was riding pillion. Karma is a follower with the Armed Police Force. Rajendra Bista of Baneshwor, the drunk driver, had ploughed his car into the scooter at around 8:30 am.

Police said the ill-fated scooter was tossed into the air before it banged on the surface of the black-topped road. The scooter was heading to Tahachal from Sitapaila when the incident occurred. The car had also rammed into the roadside wall. The couple have suffered multiple injuries and are undergoing treatment at the APF Hospital, Balambu.

Police have detained Bista to proceed with legal action against the guilty. Both the two-wheeler and four-wheeler have suffered serious damage. However, the car driver was unhurt.
