KATHMANDU, JUNE 29
CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has said that the culture of beating gurus has increased in the country in recent days.
Speaking at the 22nd anniversary of Madan Bhandari Memorial College in Kathmandu today, Oli, who is also the former prime minister, said there was growing concern that culture, decency and modesty were disappearing.
"Today, the culture of beating gurus has increased. This is a very sad thing," said Oli, adding, "In a country that lights the lamp of civilisation, it is being done to show bravery by breaking the backs, heads and ribs of the gurus."
He further said, "The government encourages such barbaric acts by withdrawing the case. It seems to defend such barbaric acts asking why students are not allowed to beat professors for obvious reasons."
"The name belongs to a student but he is not actually a student. The outside forces are street tools. We should avoid such a culture. Culture, politeness and modesty are not for the sake of others. It depends on the students what you want to be and who you are with. If you are with flies you will get dirt, but if you are with honey you will get flowers."
A few weeks ago, the government had withdrawn a case in which Tribhuvan University Assistant-Professor Prem Chalaune was beaten.
Madan Bhandari Memorial College conducted a free health camp on the occasion of its 22nd annual day. On the occasion, the college conducted a free eye, dental and diabetes health camp in collaboration with Lions Club of Kathmandu and Samaj Dental Hospital. Besides, it also organised a blood donation programme.
"A total of 138 dental, 179 eye and 21 diabetic patients benefited from the camp organised on Tuesday," informed Sujith Mainali, coordinator of the college's social welfare committee and head of the Department of Sociology at Madan Bhandari Memorial College. Similarly, about 40 people donated blood in the health camp.
According to Mainali, the residents of wards 10 and 29 of Kathmandu metropolis have benefited from the camp. "The residents of squatter settlements in Vinayak Nagar, Devinagar, Buddhanagar, Thapathali Sankhamul, and Baneshwor and students of nearby government schools and college students have also benefited from the camp," he said.
The programme was chaired by the MBMC management committee Chairperson Mahendra Bahadur Pandey and co-chaired by campus Chief Ramesh Chandra Paudel.
MBMC runs various faculties such as science, liberal arts and management.
