KATHMANDU, JUNE 29
Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah has asked all private school operators to align their teachers' salaries and benefits to make it similar to that of the salaries fixed by public schools.
Issuing a directive through his Facebook post, Mayor Shah made this announcement after receiving complaints from private school teachers that they were paid much less than government employed teachers.
Section 12 (7) (6) of the Education Act, 2018 mandates that all the teachers in private or public schools teaching at the same level should be remunerated with equal amount established by the Government of Nepal.
Despite the existing rules, there has been great disparity among the government employed teachers and private school teachers since as many private schools often provide less salary to teachers.
KMC has claimed that the complaints were registered with it regarding the matter of low salaries being provided to teachers of private schools.
Mayor Shah also urged teachers of private schools to reach out to the metropolis' Education Department in case the schools didn't pay them as per the rules. The KMC, however, has not mentioned the names of such schools that pay much higher to teachers after charging higher fees from students.
Earlier, KMC had gathered information to find out if private schools inside the metropolis had allocated mandatory scholarship quota for the needy 10 per cent of the total students.
