DAOs told to seek property details of I/NGO officials

Kathmandu, June 14

The Ministry of Home Affairs today issued a circular to all 77 district administration offices, directing them to solicit the property details of office-bearers of I/NGOs operating in their concerned areas.

The DAOs have been told to obtain the property details of the office-bearers of I/NGOs in a sealed envelop. “However, the employees of I/NGOs are not obliged to submit their property details to the DAOs for now,” the circular read.

Earlier on June 7, a meeting held between home minister Ram Bahadur Thapa and Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Tham Maya Thapa had decided to tighten the noose on I/NGOs.

Stating that anomalies had arisen in their activities of due to lack of oversight by the government, it is also preparing to tighten monitoring and regulation of the I/NGOs.

All DAOs will also have to monitor and regulate the I/NGOs and submit their reports to the MoHA and MoWCSS. The government is also set to serve a deadline for renewal of the I/NGOs that have not renewed their registration for the past three years. Though around 47,000 NGOs and 200 INGOs are registered with the Social Welfare Council under the MoWCSS, many of them have not renewed their registration for years, the MoHA claimed. Similarly, the concerned authorities have decided not to renew the registration of I/NGOs involved in corruption.
