KATHMANDU, JUNE 15
Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that citizens should be provided with accessible, safe, and reliable transportation services.
Speaking at a programme organized by the Nepal Democratic Transport Entrepreneurs Organization at the NC Central Office on Sunday, President Deuba emphasized that transport entrepreneurs share a collective responsibility to deliver dependable transportation services while also safeguarding their business interests.
Deuba noted that transport entrepreneurs play a crucial role in minimizing road accidents and ensuring overall road safety.
"Operating vehicles across various parts of the country is a challenging task due to the difficult geographical terrain," he stated. "Protecting the lives of ordinary citizens and ensuring road safety have become serious challenges, especially as road accidents are occurring almost daily in recent times. The Nepali Congress takes these challenges seriously."
Deuba also urged businesspersons affiliated with the Nepal Democratic Transport Entrepreneurs Organization to engage in collaborative efforts to address the sector's issues, adding that the Nepali Congress would continue to support entrepreneurs in safeguarding their interests and well-being.
Also addressing the programme, NC General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa said that the party's departments should actively advocate for the resolution of issues facing their respective sectors.
"Public transportation is a vital pillar of democracy. Democracy can only thrive if the public transportation sector is effective, secure, and resilient," Thapa remarked.
He further argued that Nepal's public transportation system should be developed through enhanced public partnership, describing it as a proven and successful model in the transport sector.
According to Thapa, the sector should be service-oriented, technology-driven, and efficiently managed, rather than solely focused on profit-making.
Other NC leaders, including Gopalman Shrestha, Shiva Prasad Humagain, Sabuj Krishna Baniya, and Jitendra Kumar Shrestha, also shared their views during the event.
On the occasion, speakers noted that Nepal's public transportation sector holds investments worth billions and stressed the need to promote it in a way that safeguards the interests of both investors and service recipients alike.
