Nepal Police have arrested four Indian nationals in Kathmandu on Wednesday for illegal possession and attempted smuggling of diamonds worth over Rs 20.27 million. The arrests were made during a special operation in Kalanki, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-22.
The suspects have been identified as Haribor Sheikh (43), Tamol Sadhra (40), Surojeet Das (39), and a 16-year-old minor, all from Kolkata, India, and currently residing in the Kalanki area.
According to police, Haribor Sheikh had been operating a jewellery shop named Munna Jem and Jewellers in Pyukha Krishna chowk and was allegedly selling silver, gold, and diamond rings without proper billing.
Acting on a special tip-off, a joint team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office and the District Police Office, Kathmandu, raided the jewellery shop at around 6:30 PM on Wednesday and apprehended the suspects.
During the raid, police confiscated uncut diamonds of various weights and quality grades, including J Color VS2, SI2, and IS1, along with gold and silver ornaments, diamond rings, bills, a notebook, and an iPhone 15 Pro Max among others. The total value of the seized items is estimated at Rs 20,278,360.
The arrested individuals, along with the confiscated diamonds and other items, have been handed over to the Department of Revenue Investigation for further legal proceedings.
