Dr KC signs deal with govt team, to end strike on Sunday

KATHMANDU: Dr Govinda KC, who has been staging a fast-unto-death for last 13 days with eight demands for "reforms in Nepal's health education sector", signed an 11-point deal with the government talks team on Saturday late evening.

The sources said he will end the strike on Sunday.

The government team led by National Planning Commission Vice-Chairman Govinda Raj Pokhrel and Chief Secretary Somlal Subedi was involved in the dialogues with Dr KC.

It has been learnt that the government team has agreed to meet almost all demands raised by Dr KC.

Dr KC's first demand was implementation of recommendations made in the National Policy Report on Medical Education prepared by a panel led by Kedar Bhakta Mathema.

It was the sixth hunger strike of the senior orphopaedic surgeon of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital over last few years.

Private colleges likely to launch protests

Meanwhile, private medical colleges may announce fresh protests against the agreement between Dr KC and the government on Sunday.

The Association of Private Medical and Dental Colleges of Nepal is organising a press conference at 11 am on Sunday to share its views regarding latest developments.

The Association has been accusing the government of prioritising fulfillment of Dr KC's demands while not paying any heed to concerns of medical colleges following submission of the report by Mathema panel.
