KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 15

The Election Commission of Nepal has reminded political parties and candidates to conduct their election campaigns strictly within the prescribed period - from February 16 to March 2 - for the upcoming House of Representatives (HoR) election.

Organising a press conference on Sunday, Officiating Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari urged political parties not to obstruct any individual from participating in the electoral process or campaigning activities. He stressed that no one should be hindered or deprived of their voting rights under any circumstances.

Bhandari further cautioned parties and candidates against attempting to influence voters through the display or use of weapons or explosives, intimidation, or any form of coercion. He reminded them to strictly adhere to the prevailing laws and the election code of conduct, emphasising that they must neither threaten individuals with social ostracism nor lure voters with financial incentives or unrealistic promises.

"During the election period, no voter shall be coerced into giving or receiving cash or any form of favour, including gifts, prizes or donations," the Commission stated, adding that public support must not be solicited through the organisation of feasts or similar inducements.

Moreover, the Commission underscored that election campaigns must not be conducted in a manner that undermines the nation's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, national unity, or the harmonious relations among people of diverse religions, castes and regions.

Incitement to violence and the dissemination of hate speech are also strictly prohibited during the electioneering period.
