EC finalises allocation of HoR PR seats

Kathmandu, December 27

The Election Commission has finalised allocation of parliamentary seats under proportional representation electoral system. The poll panel, however, is yet to disclose the number of parliamentary PR seats won by the parties.

A source at the EC told THT that PR unit of the EC had finalised seat allocation on Monday and submitted its report to the concerned section.

EC Spokesperson Navaraj Dhakal said it would take additional two to three days to disclose the results of parliamentary PR election.

Asked about the number of parliamentary PR seats won by the parties, he said, “The Election Commission will soon unveil the results.”

The election body had finalised provincial PR seat allocation on Friday and had asked parties to submit the list of the PR candidates within a week.

Vote counting of both provincial and parliamentary first-past-the-post elections were completed within four days of the elections. The poll panel completed counting of votes of both the provincial and parliamentary PR elections on December 17.

An EC official on condition of anonymity said, “It took more days to allocate seats than to count votes,” he said.

Another EC official said the delay could be the result of differences among EC office bearers regarding announcement of the parliamentary PR results. Some EC office bearers want election to the National Assembly held prior to unveiling results of the parliamentary PR election, while some wants to unveil the result once the seat allocation is finalised.

Meanwhile, CPN-UML leader Subas Chandra Nembang said his party had urged the EC to unveil parliamentary PR results immediately. “EC should not keep the parties in dark,” said Nembang. He said the UML would submit the list of winning PR candidates of provincial PR election within given deadline.

According to Nembang, his party would hold an official meeting before finalising the names of winning candidates. The EC has asked parties to submit the names of winning provincial PR candidates by Saturday.
