Engineering students warn of stir

KATHMANDU: The students associated with Private Engineering College Struggle Committee (PECSC) aligned with the Nepal Students Union have threatened to launch severe protest against the colleges if the college management failed to address the students’ demands.

Talking to this daily on Wednesday, Robert Khanal, coordinator of PECSC, rued that the colleges had not fulfilled their demands despite agreeing to do so six months before. “Before six months, the college associated with Association of Engineering College Of Nepal (AECON) had agreed to solve the internal problems of students through discussion with students’ council and students’ associations. We had also agreed to find out solutions regarding the management of 10 per cent scholarship through workshop. But it could not happen,” he added.

The students’ other demands include fixation of tuition and other fees by listing out some parameters through discussion and permission to establish students’ union in the colleges. The students padlocked the gate of their colleges on May 17 after the college management ignored their 15-day and three-day ultimatums. They installed back flags at the college gates on June 3.

Khanal also said the college had been taking Rs 50,000 as deposit from each student and had not made any parameters to define fee structure. “Despite our peaceful protests, the colleges have not paid attention towards our demands,” Khanal added.
