KATHMANDU, MAY 31

The European Union (EU) and UNICEF Nepal have launched a new initiative titled "Asha: Dreams in Motion" aimed at strengthening dialogue on skills development and improving the transition of young people from education to employment in Nepal.

The programme was launched at the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) 2026, bringing together government officials, private sector representatives, educators, development partners and young people to discuss ways to better prepare adolescents for a changing labour market.

The initiative features a travelling cinema and dialogue series showcasing the stories of three young people from different regions of Nepal, highlighting their experiences in education, training and job search, as well as the challenges they face in building careers.

One of the featured participants, Deepshikha Chaudhary, said limited access to structured and certified courses in areas such as cybersecurity has forced many youths to rely on self-learning. She stressed that better training opportunities could help young people convert their interests into careers.

UNICEF Representative to Nepal, Alice Akunga, said the initiative responds to concerns raised by young people about whether their education adequately prepares them for future opportunities, and aims to strengthen the link between learning and work.

Following the Kathmandu launch, the documentary will be screened in Sudurpashchim, Karnali and Madhesh provinces between June 2 and 9, followed by provincial-level dialogues involving local governments, educators, youth and private sector stakeholders.

The insights gathered from these discussions will be compiled into recommendations for improving education-to-employment pathways, focusing on practical interventions by governments, private sector actors and development partners.

EU Education Focal Point in Nepal, Anouk van Neck, said education must go beyond access to ensure young people gain the skills, confidence and adaptability needed for a rapidly changing global economy driven by digital technology, green growth, entrepreneurship and emerging industries.

The initiative aligns with Nepal's School Education Sector Plan (SESP) and reflects joint efforts by the EU and UNICEF to strengthen equitable, skills-oriented education systems and improve employment opportunities for young people.
