Madhyapur Thimi, May 2:

A two-day-long exhibition on solid waste management began here today.

Madhyapur Thimi Municipality organised the fair in coordination with Clean Energy Nepal (CEN) and Clean Kathmandu Valley Study with a view to educating people on utilising reusable waste materials and reducing the quantity of waste products.

Various composting techniques, new technique of recycling waste materials and treating polluted water are on display on 10 stalls set up at the exhibition venue. Similarly, materials made from reusable waste products are kept for sale. Four types of composting techniques — including bin, pile, vermi-compost and chamber compost that can be used for large scale composting — are being demonstrated.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony organised in the premises of Dui Pokhari, CDO Gehanath Bhandary said the exhibition will create awareness among the people on solid waste management.

The Constructed Wet-land, which treats impure water with biological methods, is expected to be popular in Nepal as it is the first of its kind made in South Asia.

Bhusan Tuladhar of CEN said the chamber composting technique developed by the Madhyapur Thimi municipality has gained popularity and that the technique could be adopted by other municipalities, too.

“We expect such exhibitions to continue in the days ahead to keep people of other municipalities aware of waste management,” he said.
