Man suspected of killing self after killing wife, children

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 1

Four members of a family were found dead in their house in Kavresthali here today and police suspect that the man of the house killed his wife and two children before committing suicide.

Bodies of Dinesh Pandey, 38, his wife Sunita Kapri Pandey, 34, daughter Ashika,13, and son Aashiq, 8, were found inside the one-storey house at Padmamsal of Tarakeshwor Municipality in Kathmandu.

Police suspect that Dinesh killed all three using a kitchen cleaver while they were asleep.

They said bodies of the woman and children were found in the same room that bears tell-tale signs of murder - bloodsoaked pillow and bedsheet and blood-stained wall.

Dinesh's body was found in an another room where he first attempted to hang himself, but eventually killed himself using the same cleaver.

"His body was found in a pool of blood but in another room. He had made an unsuccessful suicide attempt by hanging," a local leader who had witnessed the crime scene told THT.

Police suspect that the killings took place last night. However, the case came to light this morning after neighbours didn't notice any movement in the house.

Community children noticed something unusual inside the house after Ashika, who would normally come out of the house in the morning, didn't do so. Neighbours and police eventually broke into the house at around noon. All the windows and doors were locked from inside when they barged in, as per the police.

Police suspect marital discord to be the main reason for the multiple murders.

Dinesh, who returned to Nepal a few years ago after working 12 years on foreign soil, had sought divorce, but Sunita thought their divorce would hamper the future of her children, a police source told The Himalayan Times.

Dinesh had also tried to sell their house and had taken Rs 100,000 as token amount. Sunita, who was the legal owner of the house, however, refused to sell the house but returned the money to the buyer including Rs 100,000.

Sunita was in the process of going to the UK to work, Dinesh was opposed to the idea. She had also used their saving and sold off the fancy store she owned to go abroad.

"The crime seems to have occurred all due to family disputes. Moreover, it is very likely that the man killed his wife out of rage," said Krishna Hari Maharjan, who visited the crime scene.

Meanwhile, police also recovered a suicide note from the crime scene written by Dinesh, accusing his wife for the incident as per the police.
