Kathmandu, January 19

Members of the National Assembly today drew the government's attention to the need to improve the country's law and order situation, conclude the peace process, prevent corruption, and improve road and travel safety. In addition, the NA members urged the government to come up with necessary measures so that citizens get respite from the bone-chilling cold.

Airing their views during special hour of the NA today, lawmakers said they hoped the new government would find a way to take the nation on the path of development, prosperity, and good governance.

CPN-Maoist Centre's Nar Bahadur Bista suggested that the government work with the goals of achieving peace and security, concluding the peace process and promoting good governance and prosperity. He expressed hope that the government would be able to address the aspirations of the nation and people. Nepali Congress lawmaker Kamala Devi Pant drew the government's attention to the wretched condition of roads. "Travel tickets are not easily available, women face harassment in congested vehicles, and transport fare is arbitrary," she said, urging the government to focus on the management of such problems.

UML's Tulasa Devi Dahal said imbalanced domestic migration had severely impacted proportional distribution of population and social diversity and the government had to bring timely intervention strategies to manage such issues. "The needs of the hour are to prevent corruption and promote good governance. People in the Tarai should be provided warm clothes and other assistances to meet their survival needs," the lawmaker asserted.

Garima Shah of the CPN (Unified Socialist) condoled the death of Nepali pilgrims killed in a bus accident in Lucknow, India, recently.

CPN-Maoist Centre's Bina Pokharel described the new government as a 'rainbow government' in the form of a national government, saying it had increased enthusiasm among Nepalis. She hoped that the government would give good governance and take the nation on the path of prosperity. "The votes Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has received while taking the vote of confidence proved this," she added.

Sumitra Devi BC of the CPN-UML said air accidents were occurring frequently in the country as necessary precautions had been ignored. She called on the authorities concerned to strictly conduct technical test of aircraft at regular intervals make air travel safe and reliable.

CPN (Unified Socialist)'s Rajendra Laxmi Gaire commented that the provincial structure was still in a state of disarray due to incomplete policy and procedures. She also sought better management of Nepal Police, strengthening of law and order situation and making passport distribution system smooth and easy.

Sharada Devi Bhatta of the Nepali Congress urged the government to provide fertiliser and seeds to farmers in time. "The government has no excuse for not functioning well as it has overwhelming support," she added.

Nepali Congress' Narayan Datta Mishra said even the Tundikhel open space had been encroached in Kathmandu.

Maoist Centre's Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achhami said the people's trust in political parties had increased to some extent towards after formation of the present government. "There is need to forge national unity, collaboration and cooperation among political parties for development, prosperity, good governance, and corruption control," he said.

Nepali Congress' Anita Devkota, CPN (UML)'s Indu Kadariya, UML's Dil Kumari Thapa, Nanda Chapain of the same party, CPN (Unified Socialist)'s Sundar Bahadur Bishwakarma and independent Khimlal Devkota put forth their views on the issue of air safety and other burning issues.
