'Journalist Act poorly implemented'
KATHMANDU: A report prepared by the Minimum Wage Fixing Committee has revealed that implementation of the Working Journalist Act 2051 in various media houses is very minimal. The committee recently had monitored the implementation of the Act in 93 FM stations, 72 print media and four television stations across the nation. Implementation of the act is pessimistic, the report concludes.
According to the report, most of the journalists are working without appointment letters from their respective media houses. Suresh Acharya, president of the committee said that many journalists working in media houses were unaware of the Act and their rights. He informed that the committee would start its second phase of monitoring starting next week.
The committee handed over the report to minister for Information and Communications Shanker Pokharel and urged for immediate steps for the effective implementation of the Act.
Acharya further stated that media houses were gradually realising the importance of the implementation of the Act. The monitoring had mainly focused on media houses outside the Kathmandu valley.
