KATHMANDU, MAY 5

The Kathmandu District Court has refused to grant permission to keep industrialist Shekhar Golchha in custody for further investigation.

A bench of Judge Mona Singh on Tuesday rejected the request to extend detention, stating that there were no sufficient grounds to hold the accused in custody during the investigation, according to court officials.

The decision follows an earlier directive by the Supreme Court, which had ordered that Golchha be investigated on bail or guarantee rather than in custody. Acting on that order, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) had already taken a bail amount of Rs 500,000 from him.

The case relates to alleged offences under the Securities Act, 2063 BS, which allows investigation on bail provisions. However, police had attempted to seek remand under a separate insurance-related offence.

The court ruled that detention was not justified under the existing legal framework and declined to extend the custody period in line with the Criminal Procedure Code, 2074 BS.

With the order, the CIB is now required to continue its investigation without keeping Golchha in detention.
