KATHMANDU, JANUARY 10

The Kathmandu District Court has handed down an eight-year prison sentence to Sandeep Lamichhane, the former captain of the National Cricket team, on charges of rape.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Shishir Dhakal on Wednesday, according to Chandra Panthi, the information officer at the District Court.

In addition to the prison sentence, Lamichhane has been fined Rs 300,000 and ordered to compensate the victim with Rs 200,000.

Previously, Sandeep Lamichhane had been remanded to custody for investigation by the District Court in Kathmandu. However, the Patan High Court had later granted his release on bail of two million rupees.

Lamichhane was the captain of the national cricket team at the time of the rape accusation. Following the issuance of an arrest warrant against him, the Cricket Association of Nepal suspended him from the national squad.
