KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started removing algae from the Ranipokhari in a bid to make it clean and more beautiful. It started to remove algae from Monday.

The cleaning is being carried out with the support of 20 municipal police personnel on a daily basis, said KMC Municipal Police Chief, Dhanapati Sapkota.

He added, "National Reconstruction Authority has not handed over the Ranipokhari to KMC after its reconstruction. However, we started removing the algae as the heritage site is under our jurisdiction."

Discussion is underway regarding the issue of filling the water in the pond as problem has surfaced due to decreasing water level, shared Sapkota.

After the reconstruction, 32.2 million litres of water was filled in the pond and there is now only around 20 million litres of water.

After the reconstruction, President Bidya Devi Bhandari had inaugurated the Ranipokhari on October 21, 2020.
