Local peace committee offices scrapped nationwide

KATHMANDU: The offices of the Local Peace Committee constituted after the insurgency have been scrapped nationwide from today.

Information Officer of the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction Durga Prasad Bhurtel said that offices of the Local Peace Committees in all 75 districts are scrapped from today as per the secretary-level decision taken on June 14.

According to Bhurtel, budget has not been allocated to the Local Peace Committees for this fiscal year. He said that the offices have been scrapped except the government decision to revive them.

The officials of the committee had crucial contribution in collecting the details and complaints of the insurgency victims.

However, the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons and Truth and Reconciliation Commission have sent letters to the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction not to scrap the offices of the committees until their works were completed.
