Minister Basnet admits error in China trip delegates selection

KATHMANDU: Minister for Home Affairs Shakti Bahadur Basnet has admitted his mistake in sending his relatives to China trip in the name of earthquake survivors.

In the Central Committee meeting of Unified CPN-Maoist held at its central office, Parisdanda, on Monday, Minister Basnet admitted his mistake in writing for sending other than quake survivors to China and made promise not to repeat such mistakes in future.

At the onset of the meeting, Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal directed Minister Basnet either to make self-criticism in writing or to put in papers.

The Home Minister admitted his mistake which he said was not supposed to be. However, his intention was to make maximum visits of the people and lower-rung party cadres from the earthquake-affected districts, he added.

It may be noted that UCPN-Maoist Chair Dahal's granddaughter, Home Minister Basnet's daughter and nephew among other close relatives were in the delegation to China under the earthquake victim's quota.

Party Spokesperson Dinanath Sharma shared that Home Minister Basnet noted his view regarding matters concerning working style and pledged not to repeat such mistake in coming days.

In the central committee meeting on Sunday, leaders including Hem Raj Bhandari and Ganga Bahadur Karki demanded to recall the ministers representing the party in the government noting that their conducts had tarnished the image of the party.

Responding to the demand, Chairperson Dahal pledged to probe into the China trip scandal.

Likewise, Coordinator of Government Operation and Coordination Committee and party Vice-Chairperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha demanded scrapping of the committee expressing dissatisfaction over the conventional and self-styled performance of the ministers.

The meeting that convened on December 1 has been put off until December 19.
