KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 20

The Chandragiri Municipality has initiated a plan to provide house rent to those who are at risk of displacement due to a land collapse in the eastern section of the Nagdhunga Tunnel Route.

Chandragiri Municipality Mayor Ghanshyam Giri took this step after convening a meeting of the municipal disaster management committee on Thursday. During the meeting, it was decided to recommend to the relevant authorities to provide immediate house rent assistance to those affected by the situation.

According to the decision, the district administration office and other relevant bodies have been recommended to provide a monthly house rent ranging from Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 to the affected households. Currently, eleven households have reported being displaced as a result of the land collapse caused by ongoing construction work.

Mayor Giri explained that the immediate relocation of these eleven households will be arranged, and further actions for other affected families will be determined based on the severity of the situation.

He also mentioned that other issues, including compensation, will be addressed once the detailed survey report from the geological study is available, which is expected within three months.

A significant breakthrough was achieved in the construction of the rescue tunnel for the Nagdhunga-Sisnekhola tunnel in August, marking three years and seven months since the project commenced.

The main tunnel of the project spans 2,688 meters.

The Nagdhunga Tunnel Construction Project is the first of its kind in Nepal, with the goal of improving the road conditions around Nagdhunga pass, enhancing the transportation network, promoting commercial activities between Kathmandu and other Nepalese cities, saving time, reducing the consumption of petroleum products, and mitigating air pollution.

Construction on the tunnel began in October 2019 and is expected to be completed by April 2024.
