KATHMANDU, MAY 7

National Journalism Day is being observed across the country today with various programmes marking the anniversary of the publication of Gorkhapatra, Nepal's oldest newspaper.

Gorkhapatra began publication on Baisakh 24, 1958 BS (1901 AD). The government officially started observing National Journalism Day in 2073 BS to promote press freedom, professional security and responsible journalism.

To mark the occasion, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology is organising a special ceremony at the Office of the President to confer the National Journalism Prize and Senior Journalism Award.

President Ramchandra Paudel, Vice President Ramsahaya Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Balendra Shah and other senior officials have extended best wishes to the media fraternity on the occasion.
