KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 4

Spokesperson for the Nepali Congress Prakash Sharan Mahat said his party would be in the leadership role after the November 20 parliamentary and provincial polls.

Interacting with journalists here today, Mahat said the ruling coalition partners had, however, not discussed who should be prime minister after the polls.

Asked to comment on the differing views within the Nepali Congress about the coalition, Mahat said that the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee had unanimously decided to contest the upcoming elections on the basis of electoral alliance.

Mahat also said in the negotiation all parties had the tendency to claim more seats, but eventually all should be ready for compromise.

"I believe that winning more seats is important than trying to contest more seats in the election," he said and added that running a coalition government itself was challenging, but the current government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba had tried to give the country its best performance to achieve the goals of development and prosperity.

He said that the government was maintaining transparency in its actions and dealings.

Stating that the NC gave primacy to people's freedom and chance to elect their own representatives, Mahat said that it was a matter of satisfaction that even the communist forces that once said their ideology was the best had now accepted multi-party competitive democracy.
