Nepal Academy forms panel to solve spelling debate
KATHMANDU: The Nepal Academy has formed a three-member expert panel to solve the existing debate over spellings of some Nepali words.
The Academy's Academic Council meeting held on September 16 had decided to form the committee chaired by Chudamani Bandhu and comprising of Nobel Kishor Rai and Hem Nath Paudel as members, the Academy's Chancellor Ganga Prasad Uprety informed in a press conference today.
The committee would address the issues raised recently from various walks of life that the recent edition of the Academy's dictionary and other publications violated existing rules, Uprety said.
The panel would study conclusions of various seminars and conferences pertaining to the issue held in last three decades to come to an appropriate solution, he added.
Uprety, however, defended the Academy's recent spelling rules claiming they were meant to better manage Nepali letters.
He also said the Curriculum Development Centre under the Ministry of Education was responsible for solving the issue ultimately.
The CDC had changed spellings of various words in school curricula recently.
