KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 17

Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has stressed the need to publicise the party's contributions to the establishment of democracy in the country through various movements led by the party.

Releasing a book 'Brief History of the Nepali Congress' penned by NC leader and former minister Arjun Narsingh KC at the official residence of the prime minister in Baluwatar today, PM Deuba said it was necessary to defend fearlessly against the false propaganda regarding the NC as 'the party has been working in favour of democracy, justice and equality since its establishment'.

He also laid emphasis on the need to publicise the remarkable works being carried out by the NC for the country's development and people's uplift since the establishment of democracy in the country by leading democratic movements in Nepal.

He mentioned that the NC, which has been working in favour of the people and nation since its establishment, has its clear stance that the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact should be passed as 'it is for the development of Nepal'.

PM Deuba stated, "The NC has the same view regarding the project. The party has already decided to pass it."

"The NC will always respect the figures - BP Koirala, Ganeshman Singh, Subarna Shumsher Rana, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and Surya Nath Upadhyay - who have contributed to the establishment of democracy in Nepal," he said.

He expressed the view that all the citizens should read the book written by KC, saying the book would be a guideline to anyone who wanted to know about the party's history.

NC General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa said it was necessary for people associated with the NC to understand about the party, and added that the book would become a source of inspiration to those who wanted to know about the party's ideology.

The author and NC leader Arjun Narsingh KC said the book had aimed to deal with queries raised during various party programmes and training sessions at a time when he had spent approximately three decades at the party central level.

Commenting on the book, Professor and senior journalist Purushottam Dahal said it was a positive trend that a top party leader should author a book on the NC's history.

Similarly, political analyst Shree Krishna Anirudra Gautam said the book had tried to remove confusion about how and why the NC was formed.

"Despite language errors, the work is readable," he added.

Published by Oxford International Publication, the 484-page book features the NC's history, its structural organisation, contributions of its leaders, history and election symbol of the party. It has also featured the NC's struggles during the revolution of 1951, its status during the political activities between 1951-1959, formation of people's elected government led by the NC after 1959 and challenges it faced after 1961. It has also incorporated the contributions of various figures who sacrificed their lives at different times for political change.
