New statute must curb graft: Nembang

Kathmandu, December 9:

Speakers Subash Nembang today said the issues of corruption should be dealt with in the new constitution prepared by the government formed by the constituent assembly.

“Holding election to constitution assembly should be the first priority of the government,” he said.

Speaking at a programme to mark the International Anti-Corruption Day today, he pointed at the involvement of high-level authorities for protecting corrupt people. “The roots of corruption go upward,” he said.

He also defended the activities of Public Account Commission and said it has has exposed the biggest corruption in the country.

He also pointed out the need to ratify the Anti-Corruption Convention, which could be instrumental to stop corruption. “But I could not understand why the government is not ratifying it long after it was signed,” he said.

Chitra Bahadur KC, chairperson of the PAC, said the social structure is the reason to corruption. “One tries to earn and hoard money by all means,” he said. He also said the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority was made a failure due to political interference.

Bhim Bahadur Tamang, NC leader said the political parties do not have their stance on corruption.

“Politicians must have moral ethics,” he said.
