KATHMANDU, APRIL 29

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the government to take effective steps to reduce fire-related incidents.

In a press statement issued today by Commission Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel, the government is urged to ensure safety measures for fire control, conduct training, enhance preparedness, and improve security.

The statement also calls on authorities to disseminate awareness-related content through the media. Incidents of fire and wildfires have been occurring across the country in recent days, resulting in significant property damage and loss of lives.

The Commission has been monitoring these incidents through various channels.

For instance, on April 24, a fire destroyed 100 houses in Matihani municipality-6 of Mahottari district, affecting 455 people.

Additionally, one person died and four others were injured in fires reported at 49 locations, with forest fires occurring at 48 places in various districts over the past 24 hours.

In the last month alone, fourteen people were killed in fires and eight in wildfires.

The statement highlights the direct role of fire and wildfires in air pollution, noting Nepal's recent inclusion in the list of the world's most polluted countries.

It underscores fire and wildfires as major contributing factors to this issue.
