KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 10

Journalist Prakash Singh from The Himalayan Times was honored with the 'Human Rights Award 2080' by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) at an event held on the 75th International Human Rights Day in Kathmandu on Sunday.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal presented him with a letter of appreciation during the occasion.

According to Top Bahadur Magar, the chair of NHRC, Singh was recognized for his significant contributions to the protection of human rights through both journalism and social work. This acknowledgment includes a cash prize of Rs 50,000.

Singh, actively engaged in journalism at THT for the past 12 years, has been an advocate for human rights. He has represented marginalized groups in in remote and difficult-to-reach villages of Sudurpashchim and Karnali provinces. Additionally, he currently serves as the president of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Bajura.

In the same event, Bhawani Kumari Koirala from Sarlahi received the Late Dayaram Pariyar Memorial Award for her dedicated work in the field of human rights for senior citizens.

Coming from a health worker background, Singh has not only worked in journalism but has also demonstrated commitment to humanitarian service. He has rescued over 100 children without homes and mobilized financial support for numerous individuals left in limbo without treatment, helping them embark on a new life. Singh's dedication extends to uplifting the poor, disabled, and helpless, including rescuing school dropouts. These efforts have earned him a prominent place in the local community.
