Kathmandu, August 3

Cadres of the Nepali Congress-aligned Nepal Student Union today announced their candidacy for the post of general secretary with a vision to transform the student union into a disciplined organisation.

NSU is scheduled to conduct its 11th national general convention in Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu from August 7 to 11. Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba will inaugurate the convention.

Nine NSU cadres today announced their candidacy for the post of general secretary. The NSU convention has not been held since 2007.

Manoj Baidhya, one of the candidates for the post of general secretary, said, “The student movement should now focus on ensuring quality education. The new NSU leadership should be able to lead such a campaign.” Baidhya also demanded that the convention be held on the stipulated date.

Ramesh Risal, another candidate for general secretary, said, “I express my commitment to give right direction to the organisation. If elected, I will prove myself as a model general secretary,” said Urmila Thapaliya, one of the candidates for general secretary.

She said she was contesting for the post not as a woman but as an eligible and deserving cadre.

Other candidates — Dilliraj Subedi, Binayaram Bhatta, Yubaraj Panday, Prachanda Bikram Neupane, Himal Dutta Shrestha and Mitra Bhattarai — also vowed to end groupism in the student organisation.
