KATHMANDU: A man has landed in police net after he allegedly made abusive and defamatory remarks about a woman on social media site Facebook, apparently with an intent to assassinate her character.

Metropolitan Police Crime Division said on Wednesday that the suspect, identified as Bishnu Kumar Adhikari, inflicted mental torture on the unnamed victim and affected her social dignity as well as family life by posting baseless and vulgar comments on Facebook and thereby questioning her character.

The suspect faces cyber crime charges as per the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008.

He was detained on Monday by the MPCD and handed over to the Metropolitan Police Range yesterday for legal action.

If found guilty, he is liable to Rs 100,000 in fine or five years in jail or both under Article 47 of the Act.
