Nepal Army personnel injured in parachute accident

KATHMANDU: An army personnel has been injured in a para-jump accident during an event organised by the Nepal Army at Sainik Manch in Tundikhel, today.

The injured para-jumper, Nepal Army sergeant Purna Bahadur Bhandari, who fell to the ground with a thud, was rushed to the nearby Trauma Centre. Currently, he is said to be out of danger.

He was later shifted to Army Hospital in Mahankal, where he is being treated for leg injuries.

A witness said, the army personnel taking parachute jump was injured after accidentally landing by the entrance gate of 'Kathmandu Mall', a business complex building next to Nepal Airlines Corporation building outside Tundikhel. The witness added that it was a narrow escape for the para-jumper as he luckily landed only a few inches away from the fence spires.

Spokesperson for Nepal Army Yam Prasad Dhakal said Bhandari’s parachute malfunctioned apparently due to high-speed winds. He said it was a mystery why he didn’t deploy the reserve parachute. “It is a rare mistake that happens once in a thousand times. We’ll find out what went wrong so that such accidents would not occur in future,” Dhakal said.

The Nepal Army is observing Army Day in line with its age-old tradition to mark their 'anniversary' coinciding with Maha Shivaratri.
