House meet put off till March 10 for no agreement on amendment

KATHMANDU: The Parliament meeting scheduled for March 2 has been postponed until March 10 as parties fail to make any headway towards endorsing or withdrawing the Constitution amendment bill currently being discussed at the House.

The next meeting shall take place at 1 pm on March 10, according to Speaker Onsari Gharti's press advisor Babin Sharma.

"The meeting has been put off as the major political parties have not reached any consensus over the bill being discussed at the House," Sharma told THT Online over phone.

The government on November 29 last year had registered the amendment bill in a bid to address concerns of agitating Madhes-centric parties. However, the proposal has been thrown into limbo as the Madhes-centric parties demanded various revisions in the bill.

Further, some lawmakers from major ruling parties--Nepali Congress and CPN Maoist Centre--themselves have spoken against the bill and registered their own amendment proposals while the main opposition CPN-UML has been demanding that the "unconstitutional" bill should be withdrawn.

Member of the ruling coalition--Rastriya Prajatantra Party--has also followed the UML as it has also decided not to take part in the amendment debate.
